Porsche Cars North America sales have surpassed pre-crisis levels.

A month after announcing its best monthly sales growth ever, Porsche Cars North America Inc. said sales grew 21 percent in 2012 to eclipse the previous annual record set in 2007.

The German automaker sold 35,043 cars in 2012 compared to 29,023 in 2011, surpassing the peak of 34,693 cars sold five years ago.

While Cayenne SUVs continued to account for about half of all North American sales, strong demand for new models like the 911 Carrera, Carrera S Coupe and Cabriolet helped put them over the top.

Atlanta-based Porsche Cars North America, a subsidiary of Porsche AG, set up shop in Atlanta in 1984. The company is in the process of building a new North American headquarters with conference facilities and a test track at the Aerotropolis Atlanta development near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
