The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Delta Air Lines Inc. is expected to renew charter flights from Atlanta to Havana as tensions thaw between the U.S. and Cuba.
The official announcement could come as early as this fall, writes City Hall reporter Katie Leslie, who accompanied a delegation led by Mayor Kasim Reed to Cuba on a trip organized by the World Affairs Council of Atlanta in late June. They had to fly to Miami before taking a charter flight to the nearby island nation.
The newspaper cited an interview in Havana with Tony Torres, Delta’s general manager of sales for the Caribbean and Central America, in which he said Delta wants “to be in a position to capitalize on that when these markets start to open.”
President Barack Obama announced on July 1 that the U.S and Cuba had reached an accord to reopen embassies in their respective capitals.
Despite the warming ties, it will take an act of Congress to remove a decades-old trade embargo preventing leisure travel to the country.
