The Italian auto maker Fiat will quicken and cheapen its communications between its Turin headquarters and 1,200 dealers by using a digital video compression system from Scientific-Atlanta.

The MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group)-based system compresses video, audio, data and teletext information requiring several times less satellite space than analog technology and has the capacity for sending video images, said Dwight Duke, president of Scientific-Atlanta’s Satellite Television Network Division.

The network is being used to send Italian Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia dealers secure data and information including sales training, new car introductions, service information and training, policy changes and pricing updates.
