Columbus-based Total Systems Services, Inc. (TSYS), one of the world’s leading information technology processors of data, transactions and payments, announced last week that it will open a London office within the next few weeks.

TSYS Vice President Bruce Bacon, who is to lead the company’s European expansion initiatives, flew to the U.K. on Friday.  During a telephone interview with GlobalFax shortly before his departure, he said that he hoped the U.K. operation would be running within 60 days.

“We have done the preparation necessary to be successful,” he said, explaining that the company began exploring a European expansion two years ago and intensified its research last year.  It will make available in the U.K. the same processing system currently used in the U.S. by Sears Roebuck and Co. and Nordstrom Inc. and adapt its processing platforms to the particular needs of marketplace both in the U.K. and on the continent.

Currently, TSYS processes one-third of the credit cards issued in Mexico, has a 21% market share in Canada and added accounts in 15 countries in the Caribbean.  It also has entered the Central American market with the signing of Honduras’ second largest bank last month.

Besides its Columbus operations, TSYS has a card production center in Toluca, Mexico; a customer support center in Welland, Ontario; and an office in Mexico City.

TYSY services the entire lifecycle of card accounts for an estimated 269 million cardholders.  The company is a subsidiary of Synovus Financial Corp. and its Web site may be found at http://www.totalsystem.com
