When the World Affairs Council of Atlanta sought to fill the shoes of recently retired programs director Cedric Suzman, it cast a wide net in terms of geography and qualifications.

Fernanda Luchine, who moved from Europe to take the job, is a Brazilian native of Japanese and Italian descent with experience in multilateral organizations.
Ms. Luchine was working in Geneva, Switzerland, on climate change issues with the United Nations. In February, she earned a diploma in advanced studies in corporate social responsibility from the Université de Genève. Previously, she worked at the World Bank in Washington and Brazil, managing a trust fund focusing on sustainable development, mainly in Africa.
She has big shoes to fill in replacing Dr. Suzman, the longtime programs director for the council, and before that, the Southern Center for International Studies. The South Africa native who stepped down in December was known for working tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to put on programs with influential, high-level speakers. His doctorate from Harvard University and his decades of experience in international relations made him indispensable to the council’s growth, according to speakers at his retirement celebration.
Ms. Luchine has a special fascination with Cuba and has provided research for The Economist magazine on Latin American issues. She is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and English and is an intermediate French speaker.
