The New “New Middle East”: Egypt & Turkey

Upon witnessing the Arab Spring, the world saw an unprecedented series of uprisings and protests. This movement shook the region and seemingly guaranteed a new age of democracy and freedom across the Middle East and North Africa. Now, almost seven years after these insurrections, hopes of freedom have turned into a reality of violence and repression. Nowhere is this more evident than in Egypt and Turkey, two nations experiencing intense authoritarianism and violence. The Council is joined by Steven A. Cook of the Council on Foreign Relations and author of โFalse Dawn: Protest, Democracy, and Violence in the New Middle Eastโ to discuss the state of violence and repression in Egypt and Turkey.
